Before joining the WBC, the franchise was an independent barnstorming team which played games in the Great Lakes area starting in at least 1932.
Detroit enjoyed some success in its first season in the MBC, but the end of the season left a controversial taste in the mouth of many in the Detroit area. The Hed-Aids finished the season tied with Chicago for the second best record in their division, but the Chicago team had not played the league mandated 12 league games. This by rule meant that Detroit got the playoff birth not Chicago. League owners had different ideas and awarded Chicago the playoff spot and not Detroit because Chicago was seen as having a better economic future than Detroit. Chicago would go on to win the leagues first championship.
Detroit changed sponsors and names in 1936 to Altes Lagers but struggled as interest in basketball waned, partially due to the playoff exclusion.
When the MBC became the NBL the following season, Detroit did not join and ceased operations.
