Analysis of the top 6 finishers.
The top 5 finishers are:
Cleveland: 66-16
Los Angeles: 65-17
Boston: 62-20
Orlando: 59-23
Denver: 54-28
Scary Team: Porltand: 54-28 (I add them since their opponents aren't ever allowed a fair chance in Portland)
Here are their combined records against each other, since I and most pundits figure that these are the contenders.
Cleveland: 7-6 vs Orlando, LA, Boston, Denver and Portland
Los Angeles: 9-5 vs Orlando, Cleveland, Boston, Denver and Portland
Boston: 6-8 vs Orlando, Cleveland, LA, Denver and Portland
Orlando: 8-5 vs Cleveland, LA, Boston, Denver and Portland
Denver: 5-9 vs Cleveland, LA, Boston, Orlando and Portland
Portland: 6-8 vs Cleveland, LA, Boston, Orlando and Denver
Cleveland: 2-2 vs BOS, 2-0 vs DEN, 0-2 vs LAL, 2-0 vs POR, 1-2 vs ORL
Los Angeles: 2-0 vs BOS, 2-0 vs CLE, 3-1 vs DEN, 0-2 vs ORL, 2-2 vs POR
Boston: 0-2 vs LAL, 2-2 vs CLE, 1-1 vs DEN, 1-1 vs POR and 2-2 vs ORL
Orlando: 2-2 vs BOS, 2-1 vs CLE, 2-0 vs LAL, 1-1 vs DEN, 1-1 vs POR
Denver: 0-2 vs CLE, 1-1 vs BOS, 1-3 vs LAL, 1-1 vs DEN, 2-2 vs POR
Portland: 0-2 vs CLE, 1-1 vs BOS, 1-1 vs ORL, 2-2 vs LAL, 2-2 vs DEN
Key Points:
Denver's 5-9 record against the league's top 6 isn't very confidence inspiring.
The Lakers are 9-5 against the top 6 but are 0-2 @ Porland and were swept by Orlando.
Despite Portland having a 6-8 record against the top 6 they lost both games to Cleveland.
Boston is also 6-8 against the top 6 and have lost to each of the top 6 teams.
The Cavaliers' only home lost of the season was to the Lakers. Despite sweeps of Denver and Portland, they haven't faired well against Boston, Los Angeles and Orlando.
Orlando is one of only two teams to win their series against the Lakers but that was with Jameer Nelson in the lineup. Otherwise, the Magic did not lose a series against any of the top 6.
Portland did not win any series against the top 6, the best they could do is tie all but the Cavs who swept them. Important to note is that the Blazers have dominated the Lakers in Portland since 2005, it is very possible they could meet in the second round. However, Los Angeles has faired much better in Porltand when it matters most.
Analysis:
To me the REAL contenders can be weeded down to Cleveland, Los Angeles and Portland. Denver is too soft along with Orlando who also hasn't been playing as well since Jameer Nelson's injury and Boston doesn't look as scarey with KG possibly missing the whole playoff schedule now.
Portland isn't that great of a team but their youth, depth and the fact that they transform into the 1987 Lakers when they're at home makes things interesting out west. Shooters like that rat-looking faggot Steve Blake, Rudy Fernandez and LaMarcus Aldrige make them deadly, and the leadership of Brandon Roy has gotten stronger with each season. Though I think LA can get past the Blazers, they do have the best chance of beating the Lakers of anybody out west.
Cleveland has played the NBA's best basketball since the Allstar break, but I don't think they are the NBA's best team. The closest they've come to the Lakers this year was a 10 point loss at home. Despite their inspired play I don't think they have the talent to matchup favorably against LA. They've held their own against the Celtics but, I think health had more to do with that than the players. A healthy Celtic squad, I think, can beat Cleveland. Honestly, I think Cleveland's record depicts a much better team than what really exists.
The Lakers are to me, the NBA's best team. They've won all the statement games against Boston and Cleveland and have the most talent and depth of any team, including Portland. The REAL difference though, is their mental toughness. This season they are a much stronger team mentally than they were last year. Instead of wilting, Lamar Odom and Pau Gasol stepped up and took over games against Boston and Cleveland both at home and on the road. The added factor of their overwhelming depth, a healthy Andrew Bynum, the world's best player and a years worth of valuable experience make them the title favorites.
